Overseen by original producer Mitch Easter—who mixed the band's very first recording of “Radio Free Europe” back in 1981—the EP opens with a never-before-released 2025 remix by GRAMMY®-winner Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol, Taylor Swift, The Killers). Lee, who produced R.E.M.’s final two studio albums, \u003ci\u003eAccelerate \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eCollaps\u003cwbr\u003ee Into Now\u003c\/wbr\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e, gives the track a fresh take, while staying true to its indie-rock DNA. The product of all-consuming heartache, her feelings overrode her reluctance to write an album about love, and in the process became a kind of exorcism. What emerges is a wonderfully iridescent attempt to photograph a wound before it closes up — but which in doing so, picks at it too. \u003cbr\u003eMusically, there is a continuation and expansion of a sound — a machine with a heart — that has taken shape over her last two records (2019’s Reward and 2022’s Pompeii) as Le Bon has increasingly taken control of the playing and producing herself. As guitars and saxophones are pushed through pedals and percussion and voices are fed through filters, an iridescent, green and silky sound emerges, with flashes of the artistic singularities of David Bowie, Nico, John McGeoch and Laurie Anderson surfacing and disappearing below the waterline throughout. \u003cbr\u003eWhat we’re left with is an ever-changing, continuous entity, a kind of song cycle. Each iteration reflects and progresses the last, “each one a shard of the same broken mirror” — shifting, glinting, concealing and revealing, depending on how it is turned in the light. There are ultimately, Cate asserts, “No revelations. No conclusions. There is no reason. There is repetition and chaos. Radio had always informed and excited me from my early teens listening to John Peel under the blanket when I should’ve been either sleeping or revising right up to the present-day musical excursions of NTS, WFMU and numerous internet based stations. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"We decided to speak to Adrian and Dan who ran Soho Radio to see if they’d be up for us doing a daily morning show. To our surprise they were into the idea and within 5 minutes Adrain came up with the name Morning Glory. We all liked it. We were all excited. It was all systems go. In December 2017 Raf and myself started a daily 2 hour show. We did the show together, got guests in and the musical policy was whatever we felt like that day. After several months Raf found the mornings too much. Off he went into the distance occasionally coming back with a smile, and a bag of new music. I carried on alone and then suddenly in March 2020 the world stopped, and we went into lockdown. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"We set up in my house in Catford, Southeast London and carried on. The show became 3 hours a day and I started to invite friends, record labels, record shops, bands etc.. to supply me with hour long mixes that I played every day. The show took off during this time. My musical tastes expanded as I spent all day long searching for new sounds from around the globe. People started to send me more and more music. I became obsessed with the show. The audience started to take to social media and ask for certain tracks or artists to be played. With choruses bursting with melody and brightness, Ball’s vocals rise higher in the mix throughout the album, partly as a purely sonic decision but also to hammer home feelings of positivity, albeit sometimes conflicted ones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it presents an expanded emotional palette for the band, everything is still directed through their unique lens, feeling Lynchian in the way it shoots for happiness but ends up with something stranger, more complicated and more fascinating.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe strange and distinct universe the band create on record is reinforced with haunting interludes of warped speech and noise: “We wanted to create levels of texture in the album that could recall different layers of memory and time, also injecting some of our own personal experience of creating into the finished tracks. We used snippets of voice memos from the writing process, some elements are from the first recorded version or from various demos, and in the studio used a mixture of digital and analogue equipment and 1\/2” tape processing.”\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe idea of place was also key when writing, the band thinking about clubs and dancefloors as settings which directed them to strive for something immediate and urgent. “When we were writing the songs, we could actually sometimes see different rooms and imagine playing this song in this venue”. While most of the rooms popping into his head weren’t cavernous arenas, the band’s extensive 2023 tour of South America in support of The Cure also pointed towards the opportunity for a bigger and more expansive sound.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eWE WERE JUST HERE was recorded at the Black Mountain studio just outside of the band’s hometown of Dundalk. As with Heart Under, they brought in David Wrench (Frank Ocean, FKA twigs) to mix the record. “It’s amazing how he seemingly added more melody to the songs just through processing,” Noonan says, relishing in handing the album to someone else after “our hands had been all over it,” with Wrench pulling out even more depth and strength to Ball’s vocals.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eAs a band more interested in gesturing towards themes rather than ramming narratives down listeners’ throats, WE WERE JUST HERE was the perfect title for the new album.
