These five titles come from two particularly rewarding sessions held, somewhat unofficially, during a period when a ban on recording in America had been imposed by the American Federation of Musicians. At the time of the sessions John Lewis was the pianist and arranger with Dizzy Gillespie's big band and had recently returned from Europe after Dizzy's financially disastrous tour of Scandinavia and France. The remaining members of the quintet were working in the New York area, playing at those clubs which catered to the new jazz style.
